why plant native?

We are a happy couple crazy about native plants

If you try to grow plants in NW Florida that don't belong in NW Florida, you're gonna have a bad time.

Our environment is rather extreme:

we experience temperatures from 100+ degrees to below freezing,

go months with little to no rain and then get tropical storm flooding,

and have soils that range from sand to clay to swampy muck.

WHY FIGHT NATURE?

Cultivated plants from elsewhere may struggle to survive but native plants have evolved over millennia, adapting precisely to our unique conditions.

BENEFITS OF GROWING NATIVE

We are a happy couple crazy about native plants

LOWER MAINTENANCE

REDUCE WATERING:

NATIVE PLANTS REQUIRE LITTLE TO NO SUPPLEMENTAL WATERING ONCE ESTABLISHED in the right place.

MANY CAN TOLERATE LONG DROUGHTS AND/OR PERIODIC FLOODING.

SOME NATIVE PLANTS TOLERATE EXPOSURE TO SALT/BRACKISH WATER

LESS HARMFUL TO ENVIRONMENT

ELIMINATE FERTILIZER AND PESTICIDE USE:

NATIVE PLANTS HAVE EVOLVED TO THRIVE IN NATIVE SOIL JUST AS IT IS.

NATIVE PLANTS HAVE AQUIRED NATURAL IMMUNITES TO COMMON PESTS AND DISEASES.

SUPPORT LOCAL BIODIVERSITY

NATIVE PLANTS PROVIDE POLLEN, NECTAR, AND FOOD AND ALSO SERVE AS HOST PLANTS, SHELTER AND NESTING SITES FOR INSECTS, BIRDS AND ANIMALS.

MANY NATIVE PLANTS HAVE DEVELOPED SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIPS WITH SPECIFIC POLLINATORS.

LAND CONSERVATION

MANY NATIVE PLANTS FORM FIBROUS ROOT WEBS OR DEEP TAP ROOTS THAT HOLD SOIL TOGETHER, PROTECTING FROM EROSION AND BUFFERING FROM FLOODING.

NATIVE PLANTS CAN ALSO TRAP AND FILTER TOXIC CHEMICALS PREVENTING STORM RUNOFF FROM CONTAMINATING WATERWAYS
